The great thing about baking cookies is that there is not a lot of essential equipment needed. Measuring cups, measuring spoons, a rolling pin, a spatula, baking sheets, and a cooling rack are the few things you need to bake many different kinds of cookies. If you are interested in adding more equipment to this list, here are a couple of suggestions;
Accurate measurements of ingredients are extremely important. To measure dry ingredients, the standard measuring cups and spoons should be used. To measure liquid ingredients, you will need a liquid measuring cup (glass or plastic are fine).
For Rolling Out Dough;
The rolling pin you choose should be long with smooth rounded ends. Any other markings like handles or knobs would just mark the dough and you do not want that. Any smooth surface or cutting board can be used to roll out dough. A large marble slab is ideal especially for sticky doughs but it is not essential.
For Shaping Dough;
Cookie cutters are the most popular ways to shape rolled out dough. There are many different shapes and sizes. Make sure they will be able to cut through the dough. Metal cutters are the best since plastic do not always cut very well. There are rolling pins that have cookie cutters attached to them and all you do is roll it across the dough.
There are some doughs that require a piping bag and tip to pipe onto the cookie sheet. The tip is inserted into the bag and the bag is then filled with the dough. The cookies are then piped onto a baking sheet.
A cookie press is a fun thing to own. It is a mechanical press with different discs to make very professional looking cookies.
For Baking And Cooling;
The baking sheets you use should be made of heavy shiny metal. The larger the pan, the more cookies you can bake at a time.
Parchment paper is ideal to prevent the dough from sticking to the baking sheets.
A spatula is needed to remove cookies from the baking sheets and to transfer them to wire racks to cool.
For Finishing;
While most cookies are done once baked, you may want to decorate them further. Finish by sifting confectioners sugar over them, or use a pastry brush for brushing cookies with a glaze and then decorating with sprinkles, chips, colored sugars, etc.
How To Care For Your Equipment;
The metal baking sheets need to be dried immediately after washing to avoid rusting. You can place them in a warm oven to dry and then store.
